Evenfall
One of my favourite painting subjects is late afternoon light in the winter landscape. Winter light is a paradox of warm and cool in terms of the colour spectrum as well as temperature. The air is cracking cold but the scene is warmed by sweeps of golden light warm undulating over the snow-blanketed prairie. The use of black trees and bulrushes rimmed with cadmium red and burnt sienna create the illusion of light shining towards the viewer, dissolved edges furthering the effect. The bulrushes rim a frozen snow-covered lake, watching the sun set as if they are an audience.
